Not the Cookie Monster!

If you visit sites around the web you will have noticed in the last few weeks particularly on the larger sites a pop-up or headline advising

“This site uses cookies and by continuing to browse the site you are agreeing to their use of cookies”

….with the ability for the reader to read further about the cookies.

The reason for this is because of a further pronouncement from European Union in Brussels, the EU ePrivacy Law. This requires that all websites need to display or advise users of the use of cookies.

Now there are cynics who suggest that the chances of any website being picked up by the authorities as not complying with the new rules will be fairly remote but with fines of up to £50,000 it is not something that I would like to take a gamble on.

What I have found surprising is the number of firms of accountants that are unaware of the new law and the lack of available advice to clients.

Particularly for those of us in smaller practices we need to sometimes be able to know to have a breadth of knowledge across many areas in order to be able to advise our clients.

If you have not yet dealt with this I would suggest that you do because even though the chances of being caught are remote who needs any further headaches!
